Zsolt Papp said the leaked proposals augured a “turning point” for the future of the agriculture sector and warned they could put food processors as well as consumers at risk, allowing products of dubious origin onto tables.
Brussels is preparing to consolidate, reduce, and rechannel agricultural support, while obstructing farmers’ access to resources with non-transparent rule of law procedures, he added.
He said a reduction in the scale of area-based subsidies for farmers would reduce competitiveness and increase the vulnerability of the sector while offering opportunities to non-EU countries that are already threatening Hungary’s markets.
The latest package of proposals shows “farmers’ opinions don’t count in Brussels”, he added.
Papp said the chamber planned to protest in Brussels on Wednesday, joined by the farm advocacy organisations of other member states. A protest against the proposals will also take place at the EC’s representative office in Hungary, he added.
