In the end, Karácsony won the contest by 41 votes, after a recount of invalid ballots.
In a post on Facebook on Monday, the mayor acknowledged that it was "unusual" for the winner of a political contest to call for an election repeat, but suggested safeguards against election fraud had failed.
"I'm not saying there was any fraud. I'm saying that legal guarantees preventing fraud were violated," he added.
