According to the annual survey, many families save in advance to afford supplies for their children returning to school. However, the majrity are forced to take out loans because they do not have enough monthly income to cover the back-to-school expenses.

Back-to-school shopping represented a significant financial burden for 69% of parents, and another 6% stated that they would not even be able to raise the required minimum. According to last year’s survey on the same topic, the ratio was 73% to 8%. Meanwhile, 24% of parents – last year 19% – responded that starting school does not cause financial problems.

This year, most families expect to spend between HUF 20,000 and HUF 50,000 on school supplies per child. But for a fifth of parents, costs can reach HUF 100,000, with another 6% planning to spend even more than that.

The survey was conducted by interviewing 300 people representing Hungary’s 16-59-year-old population.
