The municipality joined Brussels’ EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities scheme running under the Horizon Europe programme in 2022, it said in a statement.

The objective is to cut CO2 emissions by 80% and neutralise the remaining 20%, said the statement.

By awarding the climate neutrality mission label, the EC has recognized Budapest’s climate neutrality action and investment plan, it said, adding that it will pave the way for the withdrawal of additional EU funds to implement climate protection projects.

The award was presented to the mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, at the Cities Mission Conference running from May 6 to 8 at Cities Mission Conference in Vilnius, state news agency MTI noted in a report.
