AES Hungary said it was in talks regarding the sale of the Tiszapalkonya Power Plant in Tiszapalkonya (E Hungary) and the Borsod Power Plant in Kazincbarcika (NE Hungary), which the company said had become less competitive as a result of a long-term decline in the price of wholesale electricity, the rising price of coal and biomass and an increase in expenses related to carbon-dioxide emissions.
AES Hungary said it will continue to operate its AES Tisza II Power Plant in Tiszaújváros (E Hungary). AES Tisza II Power Plant is a gas-fueled plant with a capacity of 900MW.
The company said that it would lay off 76 of the Tiszapalkonya Power Plant’s 96 workers and was negotiating with employee representatives regarding the Borsod Power Plant’s 123 workers.
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county’s labor affairs center official Edit Tóth told MTI that AES Hungary notified the center of the company’s plans to lay off 125 workers at the Borsod Power Plant and 78 workers at the Tiszapalkonya Power Plant.
