There have been eight attacks in the last three months targeting the energy infrastructure facilities of Hungary's eastern neighbor, reports international news wire Reuters. Air defense systems shot down 12 of 16 missiles and all 13 drones in several regions overnight, according to the agency, citing the Ukrainian Energy Ministry.
Hungary did not supply electricity to Ukraine for years, but this year, it became the largest EU electricity exporter, energy market expert József Balogh said.
However, this is a potentially dangerous constellation: Hungary already does not have enough electricity for its own needs. Furthermore, if the Ukrainians are forced to import electricity from the Hungarian system continuously, there will be strange settlement prices on the daily electricity exchange (HUPX).
As the Russians systematically shoot down Ukrainian power plants, the hourly settlement price of HUPX goes up.
