This made it both the hottest August and the hottest month overall recorded in Hungary since the early 20th century.

Many areas recorded average temperatures above 25 C, while parts of the Southern Great Plain exceeded 26 C. Even higher-altitude mountain regions averaged more than 20 C.

The heatwave was accompanied by extreme dryness. National average rainfall in August was just 15.6 mm, 74% below the 1991-2020 average of 59.5 mm, making it Hungary’s fourth-driest August since 1901.

Some areas, including around Miskolc, parts of the Southern Great Plain and the southern Danube-Tisza region, recorded their driest August since 1901.

Rainfall remained below 40 mm across most of the country and fell below 5 mm in parts of the Great Plain.
