Size of Drought-Damaged Areas Increasing

The size of drought-damaged areas had reached 75,000 hectares by the beginning of August and has been increasing by several tens of thousands of hectares every week, according to data compiled by the damage mitigation system, said State Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development Zsolt Feldman.

The continuous expansion of affected areas highlights the severe and ongoing nature of the drought crisis currently impacting agricultural lands.

Business daily Világgazdaság [Global Economy] reports that, in the same period of the drought year of 2022, more than one million hectares of drought damage were already registered on the electronic notification interface.

This comparison underscores the intensity of the current drought, which, while not yet reaching the devastating levels of 2022, is rapidly advancing toward a critical situation.

Two years ago, both the spring and fall crops suffered significant damage in the earlier stages of the vegetation period, Feldman added.

The 2022 drought caused widespread agricultural losses, with many farmers struggling to salvage their crops. The early damage to crops during both spring and fall significantly reduced yields and had long-lasting effects.
