If member states on the border of the European Union do not protect their borders, but let “every economic migrant through”, then the Schengen area will be “in danger”, the Fidesz politician told the daily. According to Rogán, the Hungarian parliament needs to authorize the government to “do everything possible to protect the [country’s] borders”.
Rogán noted in the interview that Hungary will only grant asylum to those who are “actually eligible for it”, adding that those who arrive from “safe third countries”, such as Serbia, should not expect to be granted asylum, but will be sent back. However, the United Nation’s Refugee Agency (UNHCR) claims that Serbia is not a safe country for refugees.
The politician emphasized that the European Commission has not provided financial support for the construction of the “temporary” wire fence on the Hungarian-Serbian border, while there has long been a fence on the border of Spain and Morocco, erected to protect EU borders, while in Bulgaria, the EU financed the establishment of a similar “protective line”.
Rogán noted that winter is coming and millions are wandering towards the European Union but Hungary will not be able to cope with such a “social problem” on its own. He said that the European Union needs to make clear that it does not have the capacity to accept this many refugees. “Careless announcements should not be made anymore, and refugees should not be encouraged but rather discouraged from illegal immigration practices, which could easily lead to tragedy,” Magyar Idők cited the politician as saying.
