According to Telenor's mobile internet data traffic report, there was a marked change from the usual daily data traffic trends on the days when the Hungarian national team's group matches were played. The data traffic generated by the operator's online TV service, MyTV, spiked during all three Hungarian matches and typically occurred in the hour before the start of the matches, suggesting that viewers were already turning on MyTV for studio discussions before the match started.
In terms of overall network traffic, the biggest spikes in traffic were seen during the first and third group matches of the national team – Hungary vs Portugal on June 15 and Germany vs Hungary on June 23 – with a smaller spike during the match against France.
The highest volume of data used during a single match was registered during the Germany vs Hungary game. Data traffic exceeded levels recorded during the final between England and Italy by one and a half times.
The highest traffic for a whole day was recorded on July 2, when two quarter-finals were played (Switzerland vs Spain and Belgium vs Italy).
While the total network traffic for the whole month of the European Championship was 3% higher than the previous month, it was up by a much higher 17% compared to the same period last year, partly due to the increasing data usage of subscribers year on year. In the case of MyTV, user-generated data traffic increased by 12% compared to the month before the event, but compared to the same period last year, it was up 37%.
