The government is having trouble finding people to fill the positions on the National Bank of Hungary’s Monetary Council because of the low pay relative to the prestige of the position, Index.hu said.
The mandates of the seven-member Council’s four external members expired on March 1.
Members salaries are linked to the salary of the MNB governor, which was recently cut 75% when the government introduced a pay cap for public sector employees.
MNB governor András Simor is paid HUF 2 million a month, level with the cap. Council members are paid 35% of his salary, or HUF 700,000 a month.
Antal Rogán, who chairs Parliament’s Economy Committee, which nominates the new Council members, told Index.hu that Council members’ pay should have been changed. The omission will be corrected shortly after the new members are chosen, he added.
