In a statement issued this week, the business association pointed to a shortage of blue-collar workers in the country and said guest workers were needed to complete investments that would create more local jobs.

It added that companies unable to make the necessary hires could scale back their activity or take it to a more favorable environment for doing business.

VOSz dismissed speculation that guest workers drag down Hungarian wages, noting that the labor code requires them to be paid the same as their Hungarian counterparts.

Because of the need for integration and training, guest workers cost employers as much as 30-50% more than local laborers, it added.
