The job portal said demand for student labor is becoming less seasonal, with companies posting nearly the same number of student job advertisements in the weeks before summer as they did in the first months of the year. The trend is also in line with last year’s data.

“Student work today no longer means only seasonal support in many places: more and more employers see young people as a year-round resource. Flexible employment is beneficial for both sides: companies can quickly expand capacity, while students can gain experience and income alongside their studies. This opportunity is often much more than a few weeks or months of earning money: it can also be an entry point into the labor market,” said Alma Kispéter, senior recruitment and selection expert at Profession.hu.

“It is therefore worth considering when choosing whether a given place could be suitable in the longer term, as more and more young people remain in indefinite-term positions where they started as students, or return to a familiar environment at the end of their studies,” the expert added.

As in previous years, the largest number of student jobs this year is being offered in hospitality. In the first half of the year, nearly 20% of advertisements were linked to this field. The second-largest category was administration and document management, accounting for 13% of ads.

The most popular positions include host and hostess jobs, waiter, server and bartender roles, shop assistant and cashier positions, as well as controller, logistics administrator, administrative assistant, data entry and trained worker jobs.

Pay Transparency High in Student Job Ads

Profession.hu said pay is one of the most important pieces of information for student job seekers, and employers are increasingly taking this into account as a competitive advantage.

In the first half of this year, more than 85% of student job advertisements on Profession.hu included wage information. By comparison, concrete salary data appeared in only about a quarter of all job advertisements.

The average hourly wage listed in student job ads was HUF 2,180 gross, up 4.6% from last year. In the two segments recruiting students most intensively, the average hourly wage was HUF 1,928 gross in hospitality, hotels and tourism, and HUF 2,223 gross in administrative, assistant and office jobs.

Profession.hu noted that these gross hourly wages are the same as net earnings for workers under 25 because of the personal income tax exemption available to this age group.

Gen Z Looks for Good Teams and Home Office Options

Profession.hu also examined the job search preferences of Generation Z, defined as 14- to 29-year-olds, in a broad generational survey this year. The survey found that the three most important factors across age groups are pay, location and working hours or work schedule.

Young people, however, attach greater importance than older age groups to workplace atmosphere, community and the option to work from home. Profession.hu said a good team and supportive environment are especially important for young workers because, in many cases, student jobs provide their first workplace experience and can shape their long-term view of work.

Contracts and Taxation

Profession.hu said students should clarify the form of employment and the related tax rules before starting work.

In most forms of employment, the job, pay and working hours must be recorded in writing by law. In the case of casual or seasonal work, the portal recommends setting out the conditions in a written agreement.

Students should also know that the personal income tax exemption for workers under 25 is available under the conditions set by law, while minimum wage rules apply to all forms of employment.
