According to the data of felvi.hu, in 2017, some 18,183 people applied for teacher training in the general admission procedure, of which 9,091 students were accepted.
In other words, just over 10% of the applicants, and less than 21% of those who started the training, eventually became teachers in public education.
According to education researcher István Nahalka, the number of teachers who began their career in the last academic year is very low. With such a small number of starters, it is not possible to replace those who leave the profession or who retire, the article notes.
