Passenger numbers at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport exceeded 894,000 in September, climbing 6.1% yr/yr to reach an all-time monthly record, airport operator Budapest Airport told MTI on Wednesday.
The figure surpassed the previous record registered in September 2007 by 5.3%.
Passenger numbers in January-September were up 533,000 yr/yr, totaling 6.8m in the first nine months of 2011.
Budapest Airport said it projects 8.7m passengers for the entire year.
The number of transit passengers rose 12% in September.
Growth was driven by major western European airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM and British Airways, and Air France, with an increase of 16% registered in this segment.
London remained the airport’s most popular destination, followed by Paris and Frankfurt.
Passenger numbers on long-haul flights were up 45%, thanks to the daily Budapest-New York flight of American Airlines and the now daily Budapest-Doha flight of Qatar Airways.
