The volume of sales grew by 6.3% year-on-year in specialized and non-specialized food retailing. The volume of sales increased by 6.8% in non-specialized food and beverages shops accounting for 75% of food retailing and by 4.6% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores.
The turnover of non-food retailing increased by a total of 1.8% in volume. Sales volumes rose by 8.1% in pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics shops, by 6.0% in second-hand goods shops and by 1.2% in furniture and electrical goods stores, remained unchanged in textiles, clothing, and footwear shops, while sales volumes decreased by 2.3% in books, computer equipment and other specialized stores and by 3.0% in non-specialized shops dealing in manufactured goods.
The volume of mail order and internet retailing accounting for 7.9% of all retail sales and involving a wide range of goods rose by 3.2%.
The volume of sales in automotive fuel stations decreased by 0.7%.
Sales in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories stores not belonging to retail data increased by 5.2%.
Domestic retail sales amounted to HUF 1.609 trillion at current prices in May 2024.
Some 49% of the national retail turnover was generated in specialized and non-specialized food shops, 35% in non-food retail trade, and 16% in automotive fuel stations.
In January-May 2024, the volume of retail trade rose by 2.7% compared to the same period a year ago, according to calendar-adjusted data. The volume of sales rose by 4% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 0.9% in non-food retail trade and by 2.5% in automotive fuel retail trade.
