The German retailer says the development will support the company’s future network expansion plans and ensure reliable, efficient service to its stores.

Since Penny opened its first store in Hungary in 1996, the company has grown into a nationwide network, and customer needs have evolved. The growing demand for fresh products, a more complex product range, and the demands of nearly 250 stores all require greater logistics capacity.

The firm says this investment marks the next stage of that growth: it will enable the supply of goods to a total of 58 additional stores. The expansion means refrigerated warehouse space will double, enabling greater flexibility and more precise product distribution.

Proximity Matters

“Proximity plays a key role in logistics. It’s important to us that both our stores and our suppliers are easily accessible, as this allows us to ensure that fresh products get from the farm to store shelves as quickly as possible,” says Viktor Reis, head of logistics at Penny Hungary. “Thanks to this development, we can respond even more flexibly to customer needs and ensure a reliable supply to our stores in the long term,” he adds.

While the warehouse, which is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, received about 200 trucks per month carrying approximately 6,000 pallets of goods when it first opened, today more than 5,500 trucks and about 150,000 pallets of goods pass through the Alsónémedi facility each month.

State-of-the-art, energy-efficient technologies, a solar panel system, and electric vehicle chargers will be installed on-site to help reduce the building’s energy needs.

The investment also includes improvements to working conditions. Common areas, locker rooms, and dining areas will be renovated and expanded to create a more comfortable work environment for employees. The increased capacity could enable the creation of as many as 70–80 new logistics, warehousing, and operations jobs.

Penny Hungary Turns 30

Penny celebrated the 30th anniversary of its launch in Hungary on June 6: it opened the country’s first discount store in Szentes in 1996, a shop that remains in operation today. Remarkably, six employees have been with the company since its inception. The retailer has been marking the occasion with events, campaigns, and customer giveaways.

“We’ve been preparing for this special anniversary and the accompanying campaign for months now. Our goal is not only to celebrate Penny’s 30th anniversary ourselves, but also to involve our customers as much as possible, since they too have played a key role in our success over the past three decades,” says Noémi Varga, head of strategic marketing at Penny Hungary.

Today, Penny Market Kft. operates 247 stores and three logistics centers, and employs more than 5,000 people nationwide.
