With a nationwide reach, Lidl had a 20.8% market share in September, according to data from GfK, Szlavikovics said.

The chain employs 9,500 people and exported EUR 338 million worth of local products to other Lidl stores in the region last year, she added.

Lidl Hungary has 487 domestic suppliers accounting for 61% of inventory, managing director for purchasing Zoltán Nepp said.

Lidl Hungary had net sales revenue of HUF 1.159 trillion in its business year that ended on Feb. 29, according to public records.

The discount chain marks 20 years in Hungary this year.
