Adjusted for calendar effects, non-food retailing posted a strong 5.7% year-on-year increase, with textiles, clothing, and footwear sales leading at 11% growth. Pharmaceutical, medical goods, and cosmetics sales rose by 6.7%, while furniture and electrical goods saw a 3.9% increase.

Meanwhile, food retail sales grew modestly by 1.5%, with non-specialized food stores up 2.7%, though specialized food and beverage outlets declined by 2.3%.

Online and mail-order sales, comprising 8.3% of total retail, surged by 11%. However, sales at automotive fuel stations dropped by 5.%, influenced partly by regional flooding.

Retail turnover totaled HUF 1.568 tln in September, with specialized and non-specialized food shops generating 49% of sales, non-food retail 36%, and automotive fuel stations 15%.

The month-on-month retail sales decrease could be attributed to the September floods, KSH noted.

Cumulative data for January–September 2024 show a 2.7% rise in retail volume, with food retailing up by 3.8%, non-food sectors up 2.3%, and automotive fuel sales inching up by 0.6%.
