Local authorities apprehended a Hungarian man trying to claim the €0.25 after a plastic container from a recycling device at a Munich store. It turned out that the bottle wasn’t from legal trade but instead manufactured for the exact purpose of tricking the automated recycling systems.
In describing the scam, Abendzeitung München mentions mafia and gangsters; the arrested Hungarian citizen is reportedly current incarcerated in pre-trial detention and has yet to provide investigators with more information regarding the alleged crime network.
Police eventually found numerous containers in the recycling stations of several retail chains. The estimated damages must be in the tens of thousands of euros, as an investigator explained that a small-time operation “would not be worth the effort.”
