Between April and June, Hungarian bank cardholders made more than 49 million purchases from foreign online retailers (29.2% more than a year earlier), spending HUF 1.111 trillion abroad, nearly HUF 100 million more than in domestic webshops.

This shift is predominantly attributed to the growing dominance of the Chinese e-commerce giant Temu. Before its arrival, Hungarian shoppers primarily bought from local platforms; however, now, for every HUF 100 spent online, HUF 52 is spent abroad.

Péter Gergely, a financial expert at biztosdontes.hu, noted that interpreting the data is complicated, as domestic banks often classify bank card transfers to services like Revolut as online purchases.

Additionally, some retailers operating in Hungary are foreign-registered, meaning transactions with them are also logged as foreign card purchases.
