A government decree issued in October gives employers the power to require their workers to be inoculated against the coronavirus "as a condition of working", "if they deem it necessary in the interest of the safety of people working there". Employees who do not comply may be put on unpaid leave for a period of one year and may be terminated after that period if they still have not been inoculated.
MOL will require its staff to certify they have been inoculated, have coronavirus antibodies after recovering from the illness or have a doctor's recommendation against getting the jab for health reasons by January 31.
MOL Magyarország managing director Péter Ratatics said the current situation requires "measures with greater determination" to protect the health of workers as well as Hungary's energy supply.
He added that the inoculation rate among MOL employees stands over 80%, but the aim is to "significantly raise" the ratio.
When COVID vaccines became available, MOL launched an information campaign with the help of pandemic experts and organized workplace inoculations, giving staff who got their jabs a day off.
