FAO‘s regional center moved from Rome to Budapest this summer and was immediately reorganized because of an unexpectedly rise in staff, 16 foreigners and 33 Hungarians working for FAO. The Hungarian government promised a support of $5 million for a period of five years, otherwise the office is funded by FAO.
The 68 programs coordinated by the office have a $36 million budget. One of the most important tasks of the office was to harmonize the agricultural policies of Hungary and the post-Soviet states. In November another UN organization is arriving in Budapest: the service center of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and will take care of Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
FAO’s decision to move to Budapest makes other international organizations inquire about Budapest as a possible site for their HQs, said Kadlecíkova. FAO will stay in Hungary at least for 15 years and will try to create a sort of UN center in Hungary, she added. (Napi Gazdaság)
