Hungary has enough COVID vaccine, Gulyás told the committee. He said the government hopes 4 million-5 million Hungarians will get their booster jabs, adding that there would be enough doses even if everybody asks for the Pfizer vaccine.
A little over 6 million Hungarians – from a population of just under 10 million – have had their first Covid jab and 5.8 million have had the second. More than 1.9 million have had their booster jab.
Any decisions on whether or not to require immunity cards for some services will depend on how the pandemic situation unfolds, Gulyás said. Some models project the fourth wave will "slowly stagnate" then enter a "phase of moderation", he added.
Fielding a question regarding mandatory vaccination, Gulyás said the Austrians are so far alone in Europe on making inoculation compulsory. He added that the government had taken "the most courageous pro-vaccine decision" when it gave employers the right to require COVID vaccination as a condition for working, while it also made inoculation mandatory in public administration and education.
