Delphi is making the investment at Delphi-Calsonic Hungary Kft because of a new order from car maker Audi and a decision to shut down its plant in Douai, France and move production to the Hungarian unit. Delphi-Calsonic makes compressors for car air conditioners.
Delphi-Calsonic CFO László Kocsis said the investment would raise the unit’s capacity from an annual 1.1 million units to 1.8 million units. After the plant in Douai is closed, Delphi-Calsonic will become Delphi’s only producer of air conditioner compressors, he added.
As a result of the expansion, Delphi-Calsonic will increase its staff from the current 480, which includes 40 contract workers, to 700 by 2009, Kocsis said. Between 100 and 150 new staff will be hired in the first half of 2007 already, including a number of engineers.
Delphi has invested $50 million at Delphi Calsonic so far.
