The Hungarian Socialist Party (MSzP) and their coalition partner, the Alliance of Free Democrats (SzDSz), want to amend the country’s Constitution to publish a list of former communist informers, national daily Népszabadság reported.
The government will seek to revise the Constitution, which forbids the publication of such a list because of privacy concerns, ahead of April elections, Free Democrat Chairman Gábor Kuncze said, the paper reported. The parties don’t have the two-thirds parliamentary majority to amend the Constitution and need the opposition’s support for it. The issue flared up in Hungary this month after Oscar-winning director István Szabó and László Paskai, the country’s former highest-ranking Catholic priest were exposed as having reported to the secret service.
