In the justification attached to the bill, the MPs Lőrinc Nacsa and István Hollik said that experts, such as the Hungarian Cardiologists Association and the National Public Health Center, were in agreement that the effects of excessive consumption of energy drinks posed a "significant health risk".
In a post on Facebook, Nacsa said that a survey showed that 78pc of young Hungarians consumed energy drinks, while one-fifth of children between the ages of 10-14 drank the beverages regularly in the morning.
The bill would establish the same sanctions for sales of energy drinks to under-18s as for sales of alcohol and cigarettes to minors.
