Bajnai will make an announcement to that effect at the October 23 rally staged by opposition group One Million for Press Freedom (Milla), according to the report.
Bajnai reportedly intends to be the joint candidate for prime minister of the green-liberal LMP, Milla and other non-party groups.
Bajnai, who currently heads the Patriotism and Progress Public Policy Foundation, stepped into the top government post in 2009 after MszP’s Ferenc Gyurcsány resigned as PM in the wake of his infamous admission, caught on tape, that he had lied about the economy to win the 2006 election.
Before Bajnai took the helm, Hungary had just negotiated a 20-billion-euro bailout with international lenders. Bajnai’s supporters saw him as a safe pair of hands who managed to avert a full-blown economic crisis. His detractors say that on his watch, along with Medgyessy and Gyurcsány, the public debt swelled to unsustainable levels.
