Hungary’s population was estimated at 10,074,000 at the end of February, and fell 3.9 per thousand in the first two months this year compared to a decline of 4.4 per thousand in 2005. In the first two months, 15,615 babies were born, there were 21,950 deaths and 3,000 marriages. The number of newborns fell 1.3% year-on-year while deaths were down 4.7%. The trend over the last few years has been for the number of marriages to bottom out in the first two months. This year marriages were even lower, down 2.1% year-on-year, the KSH said.
