A new subsidiary of MÁV, MÁV Start has started operating passenger services and employ 7214 staff. This is 900 more than on MÁV’s former passenger transportation division. Extra staff are being taken on to work in ticketing and checking tickets on trains.
The new division was launched on July 1, despite having its license initially turned down by the Hungarian Railways Office (Magyar Vasúti Hivatal). Dániel Antal, MVH’s president said that MÁV Start had no business plan, no management and not enough money to start operations, but it was granted a temporary license as it was not possible to stop all passenger transport in Hungary.
