About 90 investigators were involved in attempting to track down the illegal downloading of music, said Stefan Michalk, the deputy chief executive of the Federation of the German Phonographic Industry, said in Berlin. Michalk said the music industry was losing about €1 billion a year in revenue as a result of illegal downloading and copy of songs. The music sector’s legal action comes as western European nations, including Germany, move to crack down in general on pirated goods produced in other parts of the world and which are then exported to Europe.
Michalk went on to say that in most cases once someone who has been caught illegally downloading or copying music rarely repeated their actions. As a sign of the growing popularity in music downloading, he said that last year about 27 million songs were downloaded at price of between 99 and 1.30 euro cents. At the same time, however, the number of illegal downloads appear to be on the decline, falling from 600 million in 2003 to 374 million in 2006. (monstersandcritics.com)
