Corruption risks are higher in Hungary than in other countries in the CEE region, where enforcing rules has become more efficient in recent years. In Hungary the situation has not improved much, according to a survey by consultancy Ernst & Young.
Three-fourths of the respondents in a recent survey in Hungary said bribery in business was widespread, well over the average 62% rate in Europe, said Ferenc Bíró, who heads Ernst & Young’s graft risk management division.
About 45% of respondents said corruption is relied on to win tenders in their own industry, well over the 28% rate in Europe.
Asked whether they had experienced graft at their own companies, 27% of 103 Hungarian respondents said yes, the second highest percentage among 23 countries in which Ernst & Young conducted the survey.
