Hungary’s international conference market grew over pre-crisis levels in the first quarter of 2011, state tourism agency Magyar Turizmus’s Hungarian Congress Office told MTI on Thursday.
There were 90 international conferences with more than 17,000 participants organized in Hungary in Q1. Both numbers were higher than in Q1 2010 as well as in Q1 2008, before the crisis.
The average number of participants at international conferences in Hungary during the period was 198. The conferences lasted for 3.3 days on average.
Two-thirds of the conferences were held in Budapest and almost 18% were held in Gödöllo, a city close to Budapest which is hosting many events related to Hungary’s European Union presidency in the first half of the year.
Almost 68% of the conferences were held in hotels, but the share held in universities or institutes grew.
About 84% of participants at the conferences were foreigners, the biggest number from the UK and Germany.
Medical conferences accounted for 23% of the total number of international conferences and economic conferences for 22%.
