At the same time, the Paris-based OECD said it would seek to strengthen its current cooperation with China and India with the aim of their eventually gaining membership. “In order to remain an influential voice in the world economy, through policy analysis, dialogue and rule making, the OECD must strengthen its links with other countries,” it said in a statement. The OECD currently has 30 members. Besides the countries mentioned, the organisation also said later possible candidates for membership might include Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa. OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria of Mexico, commenting during the second day of the ministerial council meeting, said the organisation had to become “more open to other ideas and cultures.” At the end of 2008 the OECD – whose members currently account for some 75% of the world economy – is to stage a conference on the economic effects of climate change.
