During her visit, Lau will meet major Hungarian companies keen on using Hong Kong as a regional hub for Asia-Pacific expansion. She will also meet with representatives and members of Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (Hepa), Hungarian Fintech Association, Hungary-Hong Kong Business Association, Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency (Hipa), and media to update them Hong Kong’s latest business environment and opportunities.
In 2024, Hong Kong and Hungary enjoyed a robust economic relationship, with bilateral merchandise trade reaching HKD 13.3 billion (USD 1.7 bln), a 1% increase from 2023. Hungary ranked as Hong Kong’s 33rd largest global trading partner and the 8th among European Union Member States, while Hong Kong was Hungary’s 10th largest trading partner in Asia. Significantly, 9.4% of Hungary’s trade with Mainland China, valued at HKD 9.4 bln (USD 1.2 bln), was facilitated through Hong Kong, reinforcing the city’s role as a pivotal trade hub.
Lau said, “Hong Kong and Hungary enjoy growing economic and trade ties, with increasing cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Hungary’s strategic location in Central Europe, robust manufacturing capabilities, and openness to foreign investment make it a natural partner for Hong Kong. As Asia’s leading international financial centre and trading hub, Hong Kong provides Hungarian companies with a reliable gateway to the Mainland China market and the broader Asia. We see great potential for collaboration in areas such as advanced manufacturing, green technology, smart logistics, and innovation. “
She added, “Our team based in Berlin is ready to support Hungarian companies in different sectors and industries to set up and expand their businesses in Hong Kong. We provide one-stop customised support services, from the planning to implementation stages. We look forward to working with you closely to expand in the region.”
