Karácsony said the cities of Miskolc (180 km northeast of Budapest) and Pécs (170 km southwest) were also picked for the program, dubbed the Cities Mission.
The cities will act as experimentation and innovation ecosystems to help all other European cities in the transition to becoming climate-neutral by 2050, he added.
The European project has a budget of EUR 360 million.
