Speaking at a press conference ahead of the last finals, Balazs Nemeth, who heads local organizer Budapest 2023 Nonprofit, said the nine-day contest "couldn't have been better than it was" and called the Athletics Worlds "the best sporting event in the history of Hungary".
More than 400,000 tickets were sold in 120 countries and over 1 billion TV viewers around the world tuned in to watch, he said.
He thanked the athletes, team members, spectators, officials, media representatives, the Hungarian government, and the city of Budapest. He also acknowledged the trust of World Athletics in the local organizer.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe noted that 2,100 athletes from 195 countries had competed at the worlds and said that full venues had delivered "electrical and addictive atmospheres".
"We're certainly leaving here happy," he added.
Fielding a question about Budapest's chances to host an Olympics Games, Coe said he would encourage a bid.
"This is an ambitious city, this is an ambitious country, and I have no reason to doubt that they would put up a very credible bid if it was entertained through the current bidding process of the International Olympic Committee," he said.
