“If Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary join their forces it will be a significant contribution to the protection of the Schengen border between Hungary and Serbia,” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said, referring to the boundary marking the start of the EUʼs passport-free zone, according to Reuters.
The Slovak police would work along Hungaryʼs border with Serbia for one month, Reuters reported, citing documents on the Slovak government website, while the Czech government has also agreed to send soldiers and police to the area.
The Visegrád Four (V4) countries – Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary – are in opposition of EU initiatives to distribute refugees arriving to the continent, and have urged that the EU’s southern boundaries be protected. Presidents of the Visegrád Four countries and Croatia met on October 8 to discuss topics including immigration, climate change, and the Western Balkan situation.
Croatia’s President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović and Hungary’s President János Áder agreed on October 7 that the current migration situation is neither Hungary’s nor Croatia’s problem, and that the EU and the international community needs to take joint steps to solve the issue. The sides reportedly emphasized the importance of ties between the two countries. Grabar-Kitarović yesterday defended Hungary in its plans to completely close the Croatian-Hungary border with a fence that has already been built, following the closure of Hungaryʼs border with Serbia.
