Officials from the Polish Defense Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Office took part in the talks with a US delegation on its request to place part of a new missile defense system in the nation, the statement said. Both sides are scheduled to hold a formal discussion on the possible US missile defense system on May 23 and May 24, and the Polish Foreign Ministry will be in charge of the talks with the US side, the statement said.
Poland has been chosen by the United States as its first preference to place the missile defense system in eastern Europe and both sides started secret contact as early as 2002. Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski has spoken favorably of the US request to site 10 interceptors in Poland, but insisted that Poland’s security be enhanced simultaneously.
Washington says the system will protect most of Europe from the possibility of long-range missile strikes from Iran or elsewhere in the Middle East. Russia, however, strongly opposes the plan, calling it a threat to its own security and warning of retaliatory measures. Moscow’s reaction has raised concerns through much of Europe that placing missile bases in eastern Europe could trigger a new arms race with Russia. (english.people.com.cn)
