The new link will also connect Hungary’s gas distribution network with the Czech Republic, reducing Hungary’s dependency on Russian natural gas supplies, Orbán said.

The interconnector is 115 kilometers long, with 95 km in Hungary and 20 km in Slovakia. Its cost was set at over €160 million by the government in October 2013 when the schedule of trial and commercial operation was announced.

Support for the network interconnection was provided in part by a €30 million European Union grant.
