Speaking at his regular weekly press conference, Lázár criticized Avramopoulos’s proposals, under which Hungary would agree to fully integrate the immigrants imported into Hungary on a mandatory basis, and the EU would provide aid worth €10,000 for the purpose, according to Lázár. The minister described the proposal as scandalous, and said, in his view, it goes beyond the mandatory settlement quotas, official government website kormany.hu reported.
Lázár said the ill-advised proposal adds importance to the Hungarian government initiated referendum on the settlement quotas set for October 2. The referendum asks voters: “Do you want the European Union to prescribe the settlement of non-Hungarian citizens into Hungary without the approval of the Hungarian Parliament?”
Lázár said that a “no” vote will “reinforce the government in its efforts to prevent forced settlement”.
Lázár added that he believes the Hungarian referendum would not only not curtail European integration, but could be “a factor of stabilization”, kormany.hu reported. His said his personal conviction regarding the EU is that the European Council should be reinforced over the European Commission which continually “extends beyond its powers”.
