Kovács also said that the total cost of the project is estimated at HUF 9.5-10 bln. He maintains that the fence is being built to stem the tide of migrants entering the country, of which he estimates 107,608 have entered Hungary so far this year.
Commenting on the two planned reception areas being built on the Hungarian side of the border, Kovács said the government was “forced” to make a decision to set up these temporary shelters, designed to accommodate 1,000 people each, and that they would be in use “as long as conditions make it necessary.” He also made it clear they would be built outside residential areas and that the government would guarantee the safety of the two closest villages, Mártonfa and Sormas.
These actions by the government are opposed by the Socialist opposition who claim the government has “done nothing to resolve the problem but have instead incited fear and hatred” by means of a “deceptive” national consultation and anti-immigrant poster campaign.
