In an interview with commercial channel Echo TV at the beginning of the week, Ákos said that it is not the role of women to “earn as much as men” but to “fulfill their purpose”, to “belong to someone” and to “give birth to children”.

Comments by Ákos also caused an uproar among his fans, a number of whom have launched a Facebook page to encourage each other to return tickets for the artistʼs concerts scheduled for today and tomorrow evening. Magyar Telekom was originally listed as a sponsor for the events.

Magyar Telekom, the Hungarian subsidiary of German telco giant Deutsche Telekom, confirmed to index.hu today that they have “canceled their contract with Ákos and the artist was informed of this in writing this morning”. The company said it acknowledges the success of the musicianʼs career and is grateful for the years of cooperation, however, the “sentiment” of Akosʼ words during the interview conflict with Magyar Telekomʼs “credo and values”, index.hu said, citing a press announcement sent to them.

Magyar Telekom stressed that they are committed to providing equal opportunities for women and men, and that the company supports initiatives that aim to crack down on gender inequality in the labor market, index.hu reported.
