Reportedly among the most popular of a couple dozen presentation was delivered by Professor Sebastian Kummer of the Vienna University of Business and Economics; Kummer outlined the role of supply-chain management in a “multi-polar” world.
Gebrüder Weiss head of corporate sales Chaim Huijsman gave a far-ranging talk on the history of pioneering along the Silk Road, name-dropping folks like Genghis Khan and Amadeus Mozart along the way; Lafarge Central Europe purchasing manager Miguel Suarez spoke on supply chain assessment; Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary logistics director Stefan Putzlocher spoke of successful Just-In-Sequence (JIS) processes at his company; and Nestlé HR Adriatic region director David Gaal considered the challenges facing the next generation of supply chain professionals.
Prior to these, however, the congress hosted the CEE Logistics and Supply Chain Excellence Award Ceremony. Winners in the service and industry-and-retail categories were Gebrüder Weiss and SMR AMT Hungary, respectively.
Gebrüder Weiss was noted for its Control Tower Concept, a project called “remarkable” because “the key success factor of any logistics system is information, so the aim of this project was to provide better information for the service provider but also the customer. The solution offers an impressive 98.92% delivery performance and 99.68% quality performance level on average, lifting an existing successful partnership to the next level. It also helped partners solve 90% of occurring problems in time instead of the previous 60%, and tripled the initiated process improvements per year.”
Meanwhile, a newly-developed and “exciting” direct distribution system bagged SMR AMT Hungary its award. According to Translog statistics, the SMR solution for the automotive industry “reduced downtime caused by material shortage by 75%, increased the accuracy of deliveries by 15% and eliminated intermediate storage in production units. As a result of these savings, the number of necessary material handlers decreased by 75%, the amount of transfers and transactions decreased by 35% and leased forklifts were decreased by three commissioning machines.
