An agreement establishing a priority strategic partnership and offering mutual assistance in emergencies will be signed at a meeting of the high-level strategic council during another visit by Erdoğan to Budapest on December 18, he added.
The agreement will clearly show the cou ntries' commitment to enhancing cooperation and demonstrate that both countries have profited much from bilateral cooperation, he said. He pointed to Türkiye's "indispensable role" in the security of Hungary's energy supply, noting that a significant part of the country's gas comes through the TurkStream pipeline.
Turkey's transit role will be strengthened further when a contract on deliveries of Azeri gas to Hungary comes into force and if Turkmenistan starts exporting energy to Europe, he said. Energy cooperation between Türkiye and Hungary will "take on a new dimension" as the finalization of an agreement between Hungary's MVM and Turkey's Botas paves the way for the delivery of 275 million cubic meters of Turkish gas next year, he added.
Writing about the latter on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Hungarian government spokesman Zoltán Kovács said the arrangement is part of the government’s "comprehensive initiati ve to bolster national energy self-sufficiency. This move aims to enhance energy security and stabilize gas prices, given the international energy crisis caused by conflicts and sanctions," he was quoted as saying by international news wire Reuters.
