It is particularly designed to warn the public to take extra precautions.
The National Weather Service said on Monday that daytime highs could rise to above 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and reach 35 and even 37 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday. In the wake of the alert, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány called on authorities to tighten up their monitoring of employee protections on jobs where temperatures tend to be high. He also called for a relaxation of office dress codes, government spokesperson Bernadett Budai told MTI.
In Budapest, authorities have begun sprinkling roads to cool down streets, especially in densely populated areas, since asphalt can heat up to 60-70 degrees Celsius with the sun beating down. (english.mti.hu)
