A committee whose members are delegated by Hungary’s National Economy Ministry and Rural Development Ministry have granted exemptions from a ban on the construction of big shopping centers in seven cases so far, daily Népszabadság said on Monday.

The committee has received 23 requests for exemptions from the ban, the paper said. It has rejected three.

All of the requests are for shopping centers under 5,000 square meters.

The National Economy Ministry did not reveal the basis on which the committee takes decisions on the exemptions, the paper said.

Parliament approved the ban last year on construction of retail spaces over 300 square meters. The ban is in place until the end of 2014.
