Szanyi argues that this is why the government now decided to take away EU subsidies from farms exceeding 1,200 hecteres. Szanyi concludes that the step will cause food prices to climb higher as farmers will need to pass on some of their costs. The Socialist MEP proposed the ideaof giving compensation to the farmers effected, to prevent a significant rise — as much as 30% according to Szanyi — in food prices.
