Deputy state secretary Nándor Csepreghy said the evidence was sent “earlier than planned, already by Tuesday evening” to the European Commissionʼs Director General of DG Regional Policy.
Also on Tuesday, cabinet chief János Lázár discussed the matter with the director, Walter Deffaa, in Brussels, but he said afterward that the parties had come to no resolution. The evidence shows that money for the contract awarded to Altus to assess European Union-financed development projects in 2014-2020 is being funneled to the opposition party Democratic Coalition.
The documents sent to Brussels include ones that show Gyurcsány is the sole owner of Altus and that disclose a HUF 16 mln personal contribution to the party, of which he is the leader, Csepreghy explained. At a weekly press conference on Thursday, cabinet chief János Lázár said the “most realistic” explanation for the award of the contract to Gyurcsány’s company was a “procedural error”. Whoever picked Altus probably didnʼt realize the company was owned by the former prime minister, he explained.
