In the letter, Szijjártó called the economic ties between the two countries a "success story" over the past three decades, noting that bilateral trade reached some EUR 60 billion last year.

"The several thousand German companies that operate in Hungary, the German engineers, professionals, and their families can be assured that we will continue to maintain an attractive, innovative, predictable, and secure environment," he said.

Szijjártó also pointed out that Western Europe's "first line of defense" has been several hundred kilometers from Germany's eastern border for 30 years, adding that Hungary makes "serious efforts" to protect that frontier.

He said "political and social debates" rooted in "various European identities and heritages" over the future of the EU or the societies of its member states must be addressed in the "framework of dialogue based on mutual respect and the European Treaties".
